Two Victims Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Continue Hunt for Killer.

Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting at Brown University were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Officers that searched the hotel seized a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the individual was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his potential.”

Broader Statistics

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
