Two Cuba-bound Relief Sailboats Reported Missing subsequent to Departing Mexico.
A extensive rescue and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods en route from Mexico to Havana.
Military Rescue Operations Launched
Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval teams and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine total personnel, as stated by a military release.
The vessels had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation endures multiple power outages across the country.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Previous Humanitarian Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.
That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and food.
Broader International Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba due to power shortages.
Political pressure have increased lately, with remarks from different officials underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to previous statements, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.
The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
