An extensive 60-day journey circling Australia is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but parted ways from the group for a pause. The liner departed without her and returned after some time after the personnel discovered the passenger was unaccounted for.

A major hunt located her body the next day.

Officials are examining the event, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that guests and staff on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he further stated that travelers would be issued a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a order to the Master" banning any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the ship in the Australian city upon its coming back.

Chronology of Events

The vessel originally sailed from Cairns on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the senior passenger's demise. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Passengers on board - who generally pay tens of thousands of currency to join the expedition - were ferried there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Statement

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "surprised and distressed that the liner left Lizard Island after an scheduled excursion without my mum".

Through her comments, she described her parent as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a participant of a hiking group.

"From the little facts we have been provided, it seems that there was a breakdown of attention and common sense," she said.

She further stated that she hoped the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have done that might have protected Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a extremely warm period, and mum took sick on the mountain ascent," she revealed.

"They requested her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the vessel departed, apparently without conducting a headcount.

"During some point in that sequence, or not long after, mother succumbed, without company."

Operator Reaction

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with investigators to support their examination".

He mentioned that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had provided its total backing to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Standards

The liner serves up to a hundred twenty travelers with 46 crew, according to corporate information. It was purpose-built to access distant regions of the Australian shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on land visits.

Incidents of this nature are uncommon, and passenger vessels have systems to document which passengers are embarking or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Cruise lines consider these methods with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such events from happening," the expert added.
