Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested justice and the legal system prevailed.

Sixty days following receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been living under home confinement in his residence while a number of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a infamous high-security penitentiary.

Past Comments on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the far-right former soldier showed minimal compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we give these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Location Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week toured the complex in an apparent bid to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive problems – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That’s almost one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the prisoners and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible food,” continued the senator.

Backers Speak Out

He is not the only voice speaking out prior to the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent publication, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its record”.

“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Mixed Popular Opinion

This could be true due to the significant support Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. However his expected imprisonment has also gladdened the hearts of many other people who feel he should be imprisoned for plotting to block the elected leader from taking power – and also scheming to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the incumbent administration's allied group, said: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get proper handling – but dignified treatment behind bars. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the severe conditions of convicts, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties are not for criminals – decided to visit a prison to learn what circumstances are really like,” he stated.

“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “unique” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – about the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre WC with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “He could be authorized to have a set and even a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report suggested.

Political Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his outcome in the {
