Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
