Foolishness and Royal Self-Entitlement Damaged Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet
The saga started with a single photograph, perhaps the most significant ever captured of a royal family member.
Present was the Duke of York, standing closely beside a female youth, while another individual smiled suggestively in the background.
Without that snapshot, captured at a social event in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the assertions of a adolescent who declared she was transported across the ocean and obliged to have cursory relations with a member of the royal bloodline?
A strange, indicative action by someone who had overtly stated to have no been aware of her, claimed he could no have had relations with her, and yet handed over a large amount of monarchical resources to settle a long-delayed court action.
Years of Scandal
Considering this, conversations of the royal family acting decisively to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has persisted for the better part of 15 years since that photograph, and another snapshot of Andrew walking amiably with a convicted sex offender surfaced.
- Hubris: How long did his siblings, maybe even his parents, understand that Andrew was so self-entitled?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have realized, if his staff and the authorities were doing their jobs, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he publicly invited them to palaces.
- Monetary Excess: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.
Journeys were listed in official documents: private aircraft travel from the estate to a golf course and back again in time for dining, exclusive air travel instead of commercial flights, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".
World of Deference
Furthermore the presumption which required deference when he entered a space or the extreme obsession about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his friends.
He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who strangely indulged him, was still surviving. The Queen did at least remove him of public duties and honorary colonelcies in the aftermath of his disastrous and, as revealed, mendacious public statement six years ago.
Recent Developments
It was only in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the publication of accounts giving more disturbing particulars of his conduct and that of his associates.
More information have again exposed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid lying about his relationship with a convicted criminal.
The public (and the journalists) were far in advance of the royals. There was no one of any consequence to speak up for him, a result of all those years of arrogance.
Royal Worries
The more astute family members recognized that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as heretofore at least complete and unstained.
Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the legacy of past sovereigns, proving they are valuable, accountable and reactive to their people.
His actions endangered all that in peril in an time when submission and discretion is no longer adequate.
The Fallout
Finally, the famously hesitant monarch was pushed additional. There was no other option. The palace had surrendered command of the account.
Currently the removal of honorifics and the persistent and lifetime public humiliation that will afflict Andrew the most.
- Demotion: Reduced to just a private citizen
- Historical Precedent: The first member to lose his designations in modern times
- Military Service: Especially hurtful given his service in the Falklands war
He remains a constitutional officer, theoretically able to stand in for the monarch, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but neither of these will actually occur.
Future Prospects
Can persons he meets still show respect to him? Might they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Will they even say Mr,
Naturally, he is not moving to an ordinary town, but to the royal family's extensive property at Sandringham.
At that location, he will be provided by the king with one of the royal residences and given some sort of private allowance.
This is not his former home, where he paid a token rent for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.
Pending Matters
Matters remain unresolved. There are still records in the possession of US Congress to be revealed.
- Governmental Scrutiny: Could lawmakers request additional information
- Monetary Probe: Or scrutinize the waste of state resources
- Judicial Potential: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his actions
Maybe for the present the institutional damage to the institution is contained. The statement from the royal household was evidently that the removal of titles was what the sovereign, and especially other senior monarchical figures, sought.
Altered Approach
The cessation of illusion that Andrew was acting willingly. And, significantly, the concise announcement showed evidently that the institution were aligning with the accuser's narrative of events.
Additionally, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed regard for the survivors: "The measures are judged required, notwithstanding the reality that he continues to deny the claims against him."
In the end it is arrogance, selfishness and inactivity that will kill the crown. In his foolishness, self-indulgence and corruption, Andrew seems never to have learned that lesson.
