We are analyzing images and video shared this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
