Anthony Barry Shares His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach competed at a lower division club. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach win the World Cup next summer. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines commenced as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he established a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His roles at clubs included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and we dedicate long hours toward. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We have to play a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we must utilize all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy should represent the best aspects from the top division,” he comments. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to increase tempo in that central area.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for improvement knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club became Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
